We have finished our #HashTag projects and they look SO GOOD! If you didn't have a chance to stop by during this week's Open House, feel free to pop by the classroom anytime to read your child's writing and see where they spend most of their weekday.
Below you will see some share writing that we did together a class... how do we take a 'boring sentence' and make it better? How do we actually use brackets? I think the highlight of this experience was my #IncredibleDrawings. I also find it beneficial for students to know how they are being assessed BEFORE they begin to write. We went over this 'single point rubric' together as a class and learned what this might look like for next steps and strengths. Now I just have to mark all 60 of them.... #FunTimesAhead #GirlsWeekendFirst Check out their work below! Isn't it amazing??? It's only week three and they have learned SO MUCH already. I'm so proud of them all. So, did they achieve our learning goals for writing? You bet! #SoProud #BestStudents

The task: Think of a word that describes YOU or who you want to be... find a quote (and give credit to who said it...) and create a specific goal for this year that you would like to accomplish. Make sure the quote and your goal relate back to your 'word.'
The result: Masterpieces - WOW! Take a look at some of the work below, or stop by Rm 208 and see them for yourself. Aren't they incredible? I am SO BLESSED to teach each and every one of these talented kiddos. Who are we as a community of learners?
Who do we want to be? What are the characteristics that will help us create a safe, fun and comfortable learning environment where we are not afraid to take risks in our learning? Students collaboratively brainstormed some words to describe themselves and created this stunning visual for 'who we are' as a class! Isn't it amazing? We've hit the ground running at Kanata Highlands this past week - what a great start to the school year. Some of the highlights? I'm so glad you asked...
On the very first day of school, our students were issued with an important challenge: work together to save the fate of our class! Following a series of clues, they needed to solve puzzles, get to know each other and collaborate to locate the next clues and ultimately solve the case. Way to go crew - I loved seeing the leadership and collaboration emerge from this one task! All week, we've been focussing on some community building by getting to know each other. Each student has completed a fun 'FlipGrid' to introduce themselves to the class (Don't know what a FlipGrid is? Ask your child to tell you all about it... it's one of the ways we'll integrate our learning with technology this year). Below is the actual FlipGrid task... Another neat activity we did was one where we discovered all the connections in the classroom. Sitting in a circle, one student began with a ball of string. I asked a simple question (Beach or forest? Homework or chores?) and that student answered. Then everyone who agreed raised their hand and the student chose someone to throw the ball of string to... after several questions you could visually see the maze of string and all the 'connections' we have in the classroom. We then discussed the activity and realized that with so many connections between us, there are many new friendship possibilities to be made! We've also been working on a visual display of 'who we are' as a class... photos to come once our masterpiece is complete!
Thank you all for sharing your incredible children with us. We're so excited to continue our journey together as the 5/6 and 6 crew... here's to a great school year ahead! Comprehensive LiteracyStudents will engage in all components of our school board's Comprehensive Literacy Program, including Modeled Reading, Shared Reading, Guided Reading and Independent Reading. What does this look like? Often we will study one rich text together as a class, where I model specific learning strategies. Then the class will break into small group Literacy Work Stations. Each station is designed with explicit goals related to what we are learning and an opportunity to practice these skills (in both reading and writing). While students rotate through these centers, I pull a small group of 3-4 readers to work on their "next steps." These guided reading groups are constantly changing and really help to increase your child's reading skills. We will be using a wide range of texts, including short stories, novels, newspapers, online texts, etc. I also have a huge personal library, which your child can borrow from at any time. Need to borrow a book? No problem - just sign it out, take it home and ENJOY! WritingThis year, students will be writing with both paper/pencil and on electronic devices. Feel free to send in a personal device (phone, tablet, etc) just as long as you are comfortable with it being used in a school environment. In small groups and individually, students will be experimenting with a whole host of writing genres this year - bring on the creativity! During our Literacy Work Stations, we will be practising a variety of grammar, organization, word choice, style, punctuation and other writing skills. Media LiteracyMedia Literacy involves the ability to analyze, evaluate and create various forms of media. Studying media literacy in school is important to help students better understand the complex messages they now receive through multiple media channels (television, music, Internet, newspapers, magazines, books, video games, music, etc). This year, students will be able to experiment with several media forms, conventions and techniques. Oral LanguageDid you know that in English, "Oral Communication" on your child's report card includes BOTH listening effectively AND speaking coherently? In French, the report card allows a mark for both listening and speaking, but in English, they are rolled into one (Can you hear me roar?!). As a class and individually, we will practice effective/active listening strategies, as well as several communication skills and strategies.
